Mid-Year Review

December 14 - 17

Now that we have only few days left until the Christmas break, we need to reflect on all you have learned this year in your science class. Your assignment is to use your creativity and imagination to develop a Science Review of all the topics and concepts that we studied this year.

The Science Review should include the following scientific themes and concepts:

  1. What is science and what questions science can and cannot answer
  2. Use of models in science
  3. Measurements, mass, weight, volume, SI system and main units of SI system
  4. Three types of graphs and when to use each type of graph
  5. Periodic table of elements
  6. Structure of atom
  7. Physical properties and changes
  8. Chemical properties and changes
  9. The law of conservation of mass
  10. Motion, speed, velocity, acceleration
  11. Forces, balances forces, net force
  12. Friction, inertia, gravity
  13. Newton’s laws of motion

For each of the above items you should provide concise information about the concept as well as a drawing, picture or diagram illustrating the concept. Use your creativity to decide how you will develop your Science Review. Some possibilities for your final product include the following:

  • Science Tree – represent each concept as a tree ornament to hang on a tree
  • Scrapbook
  • Scroll
  • Graphic “novel”, manga, comic or cartoon book
  • Newspaper or a magazine
  • Animated movie or another computer-based product

These are just some of the suggestions for your final product. Discuss your idea with the teacher and enjoy the project. Please also consider that during the spring semester, you will continue to add information to your Science Review, so that by the end of the school year you will have a complete review of everything you learned during your sixth grade.

You will work on the project during class on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Make sure you bring everything you need to be able to work during class. Work at home if needed, and plan to complete most of the Science Review by the end of the class on Thursday. You may continue to modify and improve the project after that.
