Objectives: the students will

  • Discuss origins of life on Earth
  • Discuss the cell theory
  • Identify names and functions of each part of a cell.
  • Explain how important a nucleus is in a cell.
  • Compare tissues, organs, and organ systems.

Tuesday 9-8 Discuss science fair ideas; Complete experiments Sign, correct the test; . Experiment report if not turned in yet. If you wish to improve your test grade, submit by Friday 15 problems similar to the ones in the test. Make up an experiment description, list manipulated variable, responding variable and the variables to be controlled. Retake will be on Tuesday 9-15
Wednesday 9-9 Viewing of PBS NOVA program "Origins". Preview the questions and take notes during the show

Sign the science fair paper

Writing assignment (due Friday 9-18 ): Paper about the origin of life on Earth based on the show and the following questions:

  1. Which four elements are found in every living thing?
  2. What was heavy bombardment? What were conditions on early Earth? What effect does impact have on amino acids?
  3. Where do scientists find environments similar to that of the early Earth? What do they discover there?
  4. What were the first living organisms on Earth?
  5. What important role did they play in the history of life on Earth?
  6. Using 24-hour analogy, what happened on Earth in the last three hours of the day?
