Introduction to Life Science Assessment: Origins of Life paper - Monday 9-20 Cells Test - Friday October 1 Cells Notes Objectives: the students will Discuss origins of life on Earth Discuss the cell theory Identify names and functions of each part of a cell. Explain how important a nucleus is in a cell. Compare tissues, organs, and organ systems.

Monday 9-13 through Friday 9-17	Viewing and discussion of PBS NOVA program "Origins". Preview the questions and take notes during the show	Sign the science fair paper Writing assignment (due Monday 9-20): Paper about the origin of life on Earth based on the show and the following questions: Which four elements are found in every living thing? What was heavy bombardment? What were conditions on early Earth? What effect does impact have on amino acids? Where do scientists find environments similar to that of the early Earth? What do they discover there? What were the first living organisms on Earth? What important role did they play in the history of life on Earth? Using 24-hour analogy, what happened on Earth in the last three hours of the day?

Wednesday 9-22	"Cell Size and Scale" Internet activity	Complete the Cell Size and Scale paper
Thursday 9-23	"Inside a Cell" Internet activity	Complete Inside a Cell paper
Friday 9-24	"Cell Membranes" - make a model of a cell membrane	Complete at home if needed
Monday 9-27	Review cells. "Cells Alive!" website activities	Study for the test
Tuesday 9-28	Complete membrane model	Study for the test. Need to know: parts of a cell and functions; organization of organisms: cell, tissue, organ, system, organism; three parts of the cell theory; difference between plant and animal cells; difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Wednesday 9-29	Play "Cello!" game - review of the cell organelles	Study for the test.
Thursday 9-30	Review for the test
Friday 10-1	Test
